POPE JOHN PAUL II: GREAT APOSTLE OF THE
EUCHARIST
E - Eat His Body, Drink His Blood (Jn 6:53;1 Cor 11:28): “Participate
fully in
the Eucharist by receiving the body and blood of Christ”(36).* “Mass
[is]
fundamental for the life of the Church and of individual
believers”(41).*
U - Union with Jesus: “It is pleasant to spend time with him, to lie
close
to his breast like the Beloved Disciple (cf. Jn 13:25) and to feel the
infinite
love present in his heart . . . . How often . . . have I experienced this
and
drawn from it strength, consolation and support!” (25).*
C - Communion with God (Jn 17:11): “In the Eucharist we have Jesus, we
have his redemptive sacrifice, we have his resurrection, we have the gift
of
the Holy Spirit, we have adoration, obedience and love of the Father”
(60).*
H - Heart of Church (Mt 28:20): The Holy Eucharist is “the heart of the
mystery of the Church . . . . ‘Lo, I am with you always’” (1).*
A - Adore Jesus: “I wish once more to recall this truth and to join you,
my
dear brothers and sisters, in adoration before this mystery: a great
mystery,
a mystery of mercy. What more could Jesus have done for us? Truly, in the
Eucharist, he shows us a love which goes ‘to the end’ (cf. Jn 13:1), a
love
which knows no measure” (11).*
R - Receive Jesus (Jn 20:21):“From . . . the sacrifice of the Cross and
her
communion with the body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist, the Church
draws the spiritual power needed to carry out her mission” (22).*
I - Intercede (Jn 6:56):“Christians must be distinguished above all by
the
‘art of prayer,’. . . spend time in spiritual converse, in silent
adoration, in
heartfelt love before Christ present in the Most Holy Sacrament” (25).*
S - Sacrifice (Mt 26:28; Mk 14:24; Lk 22:20): “The Eucharistic Sacrifice
. . . is
the source and summit of the whole Christian life” (13).*
T - Thanksgiving (Lk 24:33):“Once we have truly met the Risen One by
partaking of his body and blood, we cannot keep to ourselves the joy we
have experienced”(24).** “Christians ought to be committed to bearing
more forceful witness to God's presence in the world. We should not be
afraid to speak about God and to bear proud witness to our faith”
(26).**
